Best in Breed - The Fundraising Dogs!

Today is the final day of the 2013 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show held in New York at Madison Square Garden where 3,200 dogs have been competing for Best in Breed in the seven groups recognized by the AKC. (hound, toy, non-sporting, working, herding, sporting, and  terrier) The winners will be announced this evening.

The Red Bank CROP Hunger Walk may not have 3,200 entrants but we do have nearly 1,000 human participants working and walking together to help those in need.

We realized that we forgot to count one special group of walkers: our working class fundraising dogs!

These dogs walk a five mile obstacle course filled with a herd of humans through the towns of Little Silver, Fair Haven and Red Bank. They obey commands from their owners dodging obstacles with speed and agility.

They work in the street, bound over curbs to the sidewalks, walk in the grass, move around wagons, and strollers, and  stop at the commands of the police and crossing guards. They cover the course with only a brief stop for a sip of water along the way all the time looking forward to the finish line where they  might get to share in a little snack of ice cream provided by Super Foodtown or a bit of   apple  donated by Sickles Market and Delicious Orchards.

We don't know exactly how much money these dogs have raised but we do acknowledge that every dollar counts when you're raising funds for local and global partners to fight hunger in the world.  We don't advertise and encourage bringing dogs but we have always appreciated the responsible manner in which walkers that do have managed their pets along the walk. We thought we'd share a few photos of our fundraising dogs. They're all champions to us. We are grateful for their participation.

Thirst quenched with fresh water. Apples and ice cream tasted. All smiles and contentment for a day well spent. Walk, run, roll, stroll, anyway you can do it. We all work together to end hunger.

You can watch the groups and the winners for Best in Breed and Best in Show tonight with a live stream. (8:00-11:00 USA Network) If you can't watch tonight there will be a permanent video on the AKC website.

You can look in the photo albums on our Facebook Page from this year's walk to see more photos from our 2012 our 32nd Red Bank Area CROP Hunger Walk.
